Journal of North African Studies,The Magazine
North Africa has rarely been treated as a cohesive area of study, even though historical and social links have always been strong, with most of its constituent countries having been part of the Ottoman empire. In part this has been because of its colonial past, with Egypt and Sudan having been under British control, Libya being first occupied by Italy, then administered by Britain and France; whilst the maghrib states of Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania belonged to the French colonial empire, with a Spanish presence in parts of Morocco and the Western Sahara. Today, however, the countries concerned increasingly share a common destiny. The Journal of North African Studies is a forum for scholars of and from the region. Its contents cover both country-based and regional themes which range from historical topics to sociological, anthropological, economic, diplomatic and other issues. It is the first academic journal in English to analyse the historic and current affairs of what has become an important and coherent region of the Mediterranean basin which is also linked to the Middle East and Africa. . International Journal of Environmental Studies Magazine
For more than 30 years, the journal has been pre-eminent in its field. The environment is understood to comprise the natural and the man-made, and their interactions; including such matters as pollution, health effects, analytical methods, political approaches, social impacts etc. Papers favouring an interdisciplinary approach are preferred, because the evidence of 30 years appears to be that many intellectual tools and many causes and effects are at issue in any environmental problem - and its solution. This does not mean that a single focus or a narrow view is unwelcome; provided always that the evidence is indicated and the method is robust. Pragmatic decision-making and applicable policies are subjects of interest, together with the problems in establishing facts about dynamic systems where long periods of observation and precise measurement may be difficult to secure.In other words, a systems or holistic approach to the environment and a scientific analysis are complementary, and the distinction between hard and soft science is bridged in most of the papers published.These may be on any item in the agenda of environmental science: land, water, food, conservation, population, risk analysis,energy,economics of ecological and non-ecological approaches, social advocacy of arguments for change, legal measures, implications of urbanism, energy choices, waste disposal, recycling, transport systems and other issues of mass society. There is concern also for marginal areas, under-developed societies, minorities, species loss; and indeed no element of the subject of environmental studies, seen in an international and interactive mode, is excluded."The 4 images for the 4 elements were produced by Brigita Ribena, a Latvian photographer.The lizard on the stone (Earth) comes from Pobitite Kamani,the stone forest, 20km west of Varna, Bulgaria. These are carbonate-cemented sandstone structures formed through microbial methane oxidation around natural gas seepages, ca. 50 million years ago, and now are exposed by subsequent erosion of the surrounding unconsolidated sediments and vertical tectonic movements of the earths crust.The tree in flames (Fire) is an image from Pavilosta, Latvia, at the end of the summer festival of sand sculptures, when the wood sculptures were festively destroyed.The windmill (Air) and sea (Water) studies are from Nesebar, an ancient Byzantine port in Bulgaria.The pervasive blue reflects the dominant role of water in the environment. .
