The periodical English Studies was founded more than 75 years ago by the Dutch grammarian R.W. Zandvoort. From the very first, linguistics was only one of its areas of interest. English Studies was and is a unique publication in the field of English because of its range: it covers the language and literature of the English-speaking world from the Old English period to the present day. In spite of this range, the foremost position of English Studies in many of these areas is undisputed: it attracts contributions from leading experts who recognise this periodical as the most obvious vehicle for addressing both their fellow-experts and those whose professional interest in English is more general. The six or seven articles in each issue are supplemented by 10 to 15 substantial reviews of carefully selected publications, and annual surveys of the most important works in the fields of English and American poetry, drama and the novel, and of key literary critical studies keep readers informed of recent developments. English Studies is a European periodical (and, we are proud to add, by far the largest bimonthly of this nature outside England and America). Oikos is a journal issued by the Nordic Society OIKOS, and individual subscribers become members of the society. Ecologists from all countries are invited to publish original results on its pages. Theoretical as well as empirical work is welcome; however theoretical papers should more than elaborate on previously published analyses, and empirical papers should test explicit hypotheses and/or theoretical predictions. Oikos is no archive. There is no bias as regards taxon, biome or geographical area. Forum is intended for short notes on new ideas or new ways of interpreting existing information. It provides a chance for suggesting hypotheses and for challenging current thinking on ecological issues. Opinion is intended to facilitate communication between reader and author and reader and reader. Short comments, viewpoints or suggestions arising from published papers are welcome . Discussion and debate about important issues in ecology may also be included. Mini-reviews provide an opportunity to summarize existing knowledge of selected ecological areas, with special emphasis on current topics where rapid and significant advances are occurring.
