Oikos is a journal issued by the Nordic Society OIKOS, and individual subscribers become members of the society. Ecologists from all countries are invited to publish original results on its pages. Theoretical as well as empirical work is welcome; however theoretical papers should more than elaborate on previously published analyses, and empirical papers should test explicit hypotheses and/or theoretical predictions. Oikos is no archive. There is no bias as regards taxon, biome or geographical area. Forum is intended for short notes on new ideas or new ways of interpreting existing information. It provides a chance for suggesting hypotheses and for challenging current thinking on ecological issues. Opinion is intended to facilitate communication between reader and author and reader and reader. Short comments, viewpoints or suggestions arising from published papers are welcome . Discussion and debate about important issues in ecology may also be included. Mini-reviews provide an opportunity to summarize existing knowledge of selected ecological areas, with special emphasis on current topics where rapid and significant advances are occurring. National Identities Magazine
National identity has been one of the principal forces shaping the course of history, certainly since the French Revolution. It has played a key role in revolutions, wars and state-formation. Indeed, since the late eighteenth century the nation–state has become the characteristic state form, though why that should be and whether this situation will continue are matters of legitimate debate. But what shapes these identities and loyalties? How do they develop, or come to coalesce around particular political forms? What are the emblems and symbols which convey and support identity, and how are they used?This new journal will explore the formation and expression of national identity from antiquity to the present day. It will examine the role in forging identity of cultural (language, architecture, music, gender, religion, the media, sport, encounters with ‘the other’, etc.) and political (state forms, wars, boundaries) factors, by examining the ways in which these have been shaped and changed over time. And the historical significance of ‘nation’ in political and cultural terms will be considered in relationship to other important and in some cases countervailing forms of identity such as religion, region, tribe or class. The focus will be on identity, rather than the contingent political forms which may express it.The proposed journal will not be prescriptive or proscriptive in its approach. Instead, it will act as a forum within which the growing number of scholars working in this field can explore this important subject. Comparative perspectives will be encouraged, and the journal will feature regular review essays as well as book reviews. . Subscribe to

The Journal of Mathematical Chemistry (JOMC) publishes original, chemically important mathematical results which use non-routine mathematical methodologies often unfamiliar to the usual audience of mainstream experimental and theoretical chemistry journals. Furthermore JOMC publishes papers on novel applications of more familiar mathematical techniques and analyses of chemical problems which indicate the need for new mathematical approaches.Mathematical chemistry is a truly interdisciplinary subject, a field of rapidly growing importance. As chemistry becomes more and more amenable to mathematically rigorous study, it is likely that chemistry will also become an alert and demanding consumer of new mathematical results. The level of complexity of chemical problems is often very high, and modeling molecular behaviour and chemical reactions does require new mathematical approaches. Chemistry is witnessing an important shift in emphasis: simplistic models are no longer satisfactory, and more detailed mathematical understanding of complex chemical properties and phenomena are required. From theoretical chemistry and quantum chemistry to applied fields such as molecular modeling, drug design, molecular engineering, and the development of supramolecular structures, mathematical chemistry is an important discipline providing both explanations and predictions.
