Journal of Business Ethics Magazine
The Journal of Business Ethics began in 1982 as a quarterly volume (4 issues per year, 320 pages) and has expanded to 7 volumes per year (400 pages each = 2800 pages per year). By any reasonable assessment, it has been a remarkable success.Initially there were an Editor-in-Chief and an Editor who together founded the journal, and about 35 Editorial Board members. On average, the work of these people is supplemented every year with volunteer reviewing from about 400 other scholars.In 1998 we added four Section Editors for Theoretical Foundations, Marketing, Work and International Management. Section Editors function as relatively autonomous editors, receiving manuscripts, having them reviewed in a double-blind process, and deciding to accept, reject or get additional reviews. Their decisions are usually final, though on occasion the material is passed back to the Editor-in-Chief for additional review and a final decision.About the time when the four Section Editors were added, the Editorial Board was increased to 45 scholars in diverse fields. Now, in order to accommodate the increased size and work related to the journal, we are undertaking another expansion in the list of Section Editors and substantially changing the Editorial Board. In particular, we are adding Section Editors for Business Law, Codes of Ethics, Corporate Governance, Gender Issues, Philosophic Foundations, Small Business, Teaching Business Ethics, and Value-Based Management. We are also adding Finance to the Accounting Section, and Consumer Behaviour to the Marketing Section.In 1997 the Editors of JOBE founded Teaching Business Ethics, in order to relieve the pressure for space in JOBE and to allow scholars who were mainly interested in teaching to have their own space. After some experimentation, it appears that everyone would be better served by simply adding a teaching Section to JOBE and terminating TBE. The same is true of the Journal of Value-Based Management. So, its current Editor-in-Chief will become the Section Editor for JVBM in JOBE.The new format of the Journal of Business Ethics begins with Volume 49, issue 1. We believe our reviewing capacity has been considerably strengthened with the addition of the new Section Editors and Board Members. We expect to have both sharper and speedier reviewing, leading to an overall reduction in the time from submission to publication.From its inception the Journal has aimed to improve the human condition by providing a public forum for discussion and debate about ethical issues related to business. We will continue to publish original articles written from a wide variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives.We would like to thank all those who have contributed to our success, from the editorial staff at Kluwer Academic Publishers to the anonymous reviewers, Board Members, authors and subscribers. . The journal Biomarkers brings together all aspects of the rapidly growing field of biomarker research, encompassing their various uses and applications in one essential source.The journal has enlarged its scope to include the expanding area of biomarkers of disease and now intends to include evidence-based pharmacodynamic markers. Biomarkers, now more than ever, provides a vital forum for the exchange of ideas and techniques in all areas of biomarker research. High quality papers in four main areas are accepted and manuscripts describing novel biomarkers and their subsequent validation are especially encouraged:Biomarkers of disease: covering measurement of endogenous substances or parameters indicative of a disease process and the use of pharmacodynamic and genetic markers in evidence-based laboratory medicine and treatment (markers of efficacy);Biomarkers of exposure: covering detection and measurement of internal exposure to drugs and other chemicals; Biomarkers of response: including measures of endogenous substances or parameters indicative of pathological or biochemical changes both toxicodynamic and pharmacodynamic, resulting from exposure to drugs and other chemicals;Biomarkers of susceptibility:: including genetic factors which alter susceptibility to drugs and other chemicals.Manuscripts can describe biomarkers measured in humans or other animals in vivo or in vitro. Biomarkers will consider publishing negative data from studies of biomarkers of susceptibility in human populations.The emphasis will be on demonstrating relationships between markers and effects rather than methodological papers unless they describe novel techniques.Our preference is for authors to make their initial submission for peer review as an attached word document, emailed to john.timbrell@kcl.ac.uk. Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere Magazine
In recent years, the subject of the origin and early evolution of life has seen an unprecedented development. New theories concerning the origins of life, such as cometary sources of organics, the possible role of marine hydrothermal systems on the chemistry of the primitive earth and the postulate of the RNA world have brought many new scientists to the field of origins of life. It is the role of Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere to bring these articles together in one journal.While any scientific study which contributes to our understanding of the origins of life is suitable for inclusion in the journal, some examples of important areas of interest are: prebiotic chemistry and the nature of Earths early environment, self-replicating and self-organizing systems, the theory of the RNA world and other possible precursor systems, and the problem of the origin of the genetic code. Early evolution of life - as revealed by such techniques as the elucidation of biochemical pathways, molecular phylogeny, the study of Precambrian sediments and fossils and of major innovations in microbial evolution - forms a second focus. Related to these core areas, Astrobiology/Exobiology refers to the origin and evolution of life in a cosmic context, and includes planetary atmospheres, interstellar chemistry, the organic chemistry of comets, meteorites, asteroids and other small bodies, life detection and related areas. Experimental papers, theoretical articles and authorative literature reviews are all appropriate forms.Since the journals first publication in 1968, when it was entitled Space Life Sciences, from 1974 to 1983, when it was called Origins of Life, and from 1984 to the present as Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere, it has continued to publish special issues and papers dealing with important topics concerning the origin and early evolution of life. For example, recent special issues of the journal include `Marine Hydrothermal Systems, `Comets and the Origins and Evolution of Life, and `RNA and the Origins of Life. In addition, Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere publishes the abstracts from the triennial meetings of the International Society of the Study of the Origins of Life as well as key papers from these meetings. .
