Geobiology Magazine
Geobiology is a new journal to be launched in 2003. The first issue will be published in July, followed by a second issue in October. From 2004 the journal will be published quarterly.The field of geobiology explores the relationship between life and the Earths physical and chemical environment. At its heart, geobiological research merges disciplines in the earth and biological sciences including, but not restricted to, microbiology, microbial ecology, plant physiology, molecular biology, paleontology, EARLY EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY, mineralogy, geochemistry, sedimentology, ENVIRONMENTAL GEOLOGY, oceanography, ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES and astrobiology. Over the past few years a true explosion in geobiological research has occurred, yet publication venues are largely restricted to the usual traditional disciplinary journals.Geobiology aims to provide a natural home for geobiological research, allowing the cross-fertilization of critical ideas, and promoting cooperation and advancement in this emerging field. We also aim to provide you with a forum for the rapid publication of your results in an international journal of high standing. We are particularly interested in papers crossing disciplines and containing both geological and biological elements.Geobiology now invites submission of high-quality articles in the following areas:Origins and evolution of life,Evolution of the atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere,The sedimentary rock record and geobiology of critical intervals,Paleobiology and evolutionary ecology,Environmental microbiology,Biogeochemistry and global elemental cycles,Microbe-mineral interactions,Biomarkers,Molecular ecology and phylogenetics,Geobiology offers as standard practice double-blind reviewing, in which both authors and reviewers are anonymous to each other. Landscape Ecology Magazine
The field of landscape ecology, characterized by its highly interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary goals and approaches, focuses on the formation, dynamics, and consequences of spatial heterogeneity in natural and human-dominated landscapes. Landscape Ecology seeks new and innovative papers that improve our understanding of the relationship between spatial pattern and ecological and socioeconomic processes on multiple scales, and that provide guidance and solutions to help develop and maintain sustainable landscapes. Empirical, theoretical, modeling, and methodological papers are all welcome. The following research areas are particularly relevant to the journal: - Relationships among landscape pattern, ecological processes, and scale Land use and land cover change and its ecological consequences - Landscape fragmentation and its effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning - Effects of landscape heterogeneity on population dynamics, ecosystem processes, and ecosystem services - Disturbance and patch dynamics in natural and anthropogenic landscapes - Scaling – transferring information across space, time, and organizational levels - Applications of nonlinear dynamics and complexity science in landscape studies - Landscape approaches to biodiversity conservation, environmental management, and ecological restoration - Integration between ecology and landscape planning, design, and architecture - Transdisciplinary studies of landscape sustainability Papers submitted to the journal must show adequate awareness of the current literature and research questions in landscape ecology that are pertinent to the subject matter of concern. Purely descriptive papers are discouraged unless they document important and relatively unknown landscape aspects of broad interest. History and Anthropology Magazine
History and Anthropology will continue to address the intersection of history and social sciences, focussing on the interchange between anthropologically-informed history, historically-informed anthropology and the history of ethnographic and anthropological representation. It is now widely perceived that the formerly dominant ahistorical perspectives within anthropology severely restricted interpretation and analyses. Much recent work has therefore been concerned with social change and colonial history and the traditional problems such as symbolism, have been rethought in historical terms.History and Anthropology publishes articles which develop these concerns, and is particularly interested in linking new substantive analyses with critical perspectives on anthropological discourse. The journal publishes studies of: economic, religious and linguistic change; European and non-European colonial systems; transformations of art and material culture; gender in history and culture; encounters with and images of "others"; the influences of anthropological representations upon indigenous consciousness and culture; the various contributions of anthropology to colonial practice; and the development of ethnological and anthropological ideals and investigative techniques.The editors therefore welcome regional and thematic studies oriented towards wider analytic or critical issues. All papers should be aimed at the wider group of those interested in anthropology, history and discourse, rather than sub-disciplinary traditions; articles concerned with particular geographic regions or debates should therefore not presume prior knowledge of the area. . Journal of Paleolimnology Magazine
The realization that a historical perspective is often useful, if not essential, to the understanding of most limnological processes has resulted in the recent surge of interest in paleolimnology. The main aim of the Journal of Paleolimnology is the provision of a vehicle for the rapid dissemination of original scientific work dealing with the reconstruction of lake histories. Although the majority of papers deal with lakes, paleoenvironmental studies of river, wetland, peatland and estuary systems are also eligible for publication.The Journal of Paleolimnology, like the subject itself, is multidisciplinary in nature, and papers are published that are concerned with all aspects (e.g. biological, chemical, physical, geological, etc.) of the reconstruction and interpretation of lake histories. Both applied and more theoretical papers are equally encouraged. The Journal of Paleolimnology will continue to be a major repository for papers dealing with climatic change, as well as other pressing topics, such as global environmental change, lake acidification, eutrophication, long-term monitoring, and other aspects of lake ontogeny. Taxonomic and methodological papers are also acceptable provided they are of relatively broad interest. New equipment designs are frequently featured. In addition to original data and ideas, the Journal of Paleolimnology also publishes review articles, commentaries and program announcements. A relevant Book Review Section is also featured. The Journal of Paleolimnology is published eight times per year by Springer.The Journal of Paleolimnology has an Impact Factor of 2.33 and is the 2nd best cited journal in Limnology according to the ISI citation report for the year 2003. . Microbial Ecology in Health & Disease Magazine
Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease is the official journal of the Society of Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease (SOMED) and is also recognised by the Oral Microbiology and Immunology Group (OMIG) of the British Society for Dental Research (BSDR).The aim of this international journal is to draw together research on different human microbial eco-systems, and to increase our understanding of their role in health and disease. This research has received new impetus in recent years as it has become clearer what part is played by the normal, stable, microbial flora in preventing infection, especially opportunist infection, and related to this, the potentially deleterious effects of the use of antibiotics. The journal will consider manuscripts primarily on the human microbial flora, but also that of other animals, and its development and interactions. Topics covered include:the microbial populations of the mouth and skin, and in the respiratory, gastro-intestinal and genito-urinary tracts . investigative methods . animal and in vitro models . the effect of antibiotics or diet on the commensal flora or its development . alterations in the host environment (e.g. the effect of foreign bodies or change in organs and tissues . the role of immunological and other mechanisms that help maintain a stable flora . the clinical application of commensal flora in treatment and prevention of disease. Manuscripts based on gnotobiotic research are particularly welcome. .
