Microbial Ecology in Health & Disease Magazine
Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease is the official journal of the Society of Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease (SOMED) and is also recognised by the Oral Microbiology and Immunology Group (OMIG) of the British Society for Dental Research (BSDR).The aim of this international journal is to draw together research on different human microbial eco-systems, and to increase our understanding of their role in health and disease. This research has received new impetus in recent years as it has become clearer what part is played by the normal, stable, microbial flora in preventing infection, especially opportunist infection, and related to this, the potentially deleterious effects of the use of antibiotics. The journal will consider manuscripts primarily on the human microbial flora, but also that of other animals, and its development and interactions. Topics covered include:the microbial populations of the mouth and skin, and in the respiratory, gastro-intestinal and genito-urinary tracts . investigative methods . animal and in vitro models . the effect of antibiotics or diet on the commensal flora or its development . alterations in the host environment (e.g. the effect of foreign bodies or change in organs and tissues . the role of immunological and other mechanisms that help maintain a stable flora . the clinical application of commensal flora in treatment and prevention of disease. Manuscripts based on gnotobiotic research are particularly welcome. . Computational & Mathematical Organization Theory Magazine
Computational & Mathematical Organization Theory provides an international forum for interdisciplinary research that combines computation, organizations and society. The goal is to advance the state of science in formal reasoning, analysis, and system building drawing on and encouraging advances in areas at the confluence of social networks, artificial intelligence, complexity, machine learning, sociology, business, political science, economics, and operations research. The papers in this journal will lead to the development of newtheories that explain and predict the behaviour of complex adaptive systems, new computational models and technologies that are responsible to society, business, policy, and law, new methods for integrating data, computational models, analysis and visualization techniques.Various types of papers and underlying research are welcome. Papers presenting, validating, or applying models and/or computational techniques, new algorithms, dynamic metrics for networks and complex systems and papers comparing, contrasting and docking computational models are strongly encouraged. Both applied and theoretical work is strongly encouraged. The editors encourage theoretical research on fundamental principles of social behaviour such as coordination, cooperation, evolution, and destabilization. The editors encourage applied research representing actual organizational or policy problems that can be addressed using computational tools. Work related to fundamental concepts, corporate, military or intelligence issues are welcome.The journal publishes a number of special issues on focused topics, including organizations of intelligent agents, counter-terrorism, computational statistics for networks, and organizations in crises. In addition, tutorial papers, such as how to check the robustness of a simulation, or system details - such as algorithm descriptions are also welcome. The audience is international in scope. It includes researchers, students, academic, corporate and military personnel in all of the social and organizational disciplines, operations research and graph theory, mathematics, computer science, and management.lEditorial Policy: The refereeing of papers in each of these areas is directed by Area Editors. Authors may recommend reviewers and an Area Editor. Computational and Mathematical Organization Theory publishes relevant book reviews, meeting announcements, and brief notes. Readers will vary in their mathematical and computational experience. The authors should keep this in mind in preparing the manuscript.Guidelines: For mathematical models: Define non-elementary mathematical symbols. Define all terms before they appear in an equation. For computational models: We do not require that code be provided or shared. However, we would like to encourage the sharing of code, when possible. If possible, information on how to access and run code should be provided. Otherwise, information should be included on whether it is possible to obtain a copy of the code, and if it is possible, how the reader can obtain the code. Information on what language the code was written in, what it was compiled on, average run time, and special portability constraints should be mentioned in a footnote (or in text if this is critical to the papers argument). Our culture is a scientific one, defining what is natural and what is rational. In our daily experience, power is exercised through expertise, e.g. in science, technology and medicine. Science as Culture explores how all these shape the values which contend for influence over the wider society.Science mediates our cultural experience. It increasingly defines what it is to be a person, through genetics, medicine and information technology. Its values get embodied and naturalized in concepts, techniques, research priorities, gadgets and advertising.Many films, artworks and novels express popular concerns about these developments.In a society where icons of progress are drawn from science, technology and medicine, they are either celebrated or demonised. Often their progress is feared as unnatural, while their critics are labelled irrational. Public concerns are rebuffed by ostensibly value-neutral experts and positivist polemics.Yet the culture of science is open to study like any other culture. Cultural studies analyses the role of expertise throughout society. Many journals address the history, philosophy and social studies of science, its popularisation, and the public understanding of society.Amidst these journals, Science as Culture is the only source of critique of the way science is going, as one of our readers put it. Not simply criticism, critique analyses the underlying frameworks, assumptions and terms of reference. It emphasizes the fundamental role of values, interests, ideology and purposes -- which would otherwise remain hidden in the guise of neutrality and objectivity. Science as Culture places science within the wider debate on the values which constitute culture; it is not the journal for a particular academic discipline.Science as Culture encompasses peoples experiences -- at the workplace, the cinema, the computer, the hospital,the home and the academy. Set-Valued Analysis is an international journal devoted to all aspects of mathematical analysis involving multifunctions (otherwise called set-valued maps) and topics related to them. The journal publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed original papers. Only exceptionally, it will also publish very authoritative expository and survey articles on subjects of special interest.Set-valued analysis is now widely recognized to be one of the most unifying, powerful and versatile tools of contemporary mathematical analysis, having numerous applications in different branches of pure and applied mathematics. No existing journal is entirely devoted to this important discipline. Set-Valued Analysis fills this gap. Since the journal aims to serve not only the international community of specialists, but also that of users of set-valued analysis (promoting, in such way, a strong interaction between them), particular emphasis is placed on applications of it, on the nature of which no restriction is imposed, in principle. Totalitarian Movements and Political Religions will scrutinise all attempts to totally refashion mankind and society, whether these hailed from the Left or the Right which, unusually, will receive equal consideration. Although its primary focus will be on the authoritarian and totalitarian politics of the twentieth century, the journal will also provide a forum for the wider discussion of the politics and faith of salvation in general, from the first stirrings of millenarian longings in the Middle Ages to the fundamentalist creeds of the present, together with examination of their inexorably catastrophic consequences. There are no chronological or geographical limitations, and re-evaluation of pioneering scholarship in these fields will be as important as original contributions or reviews of the latest scholarship.
