Self and Identity Magazine
Work on self and identity has a special place in the study of human nature, as self-concerns are arguably at the center of individuals’ striving for well-being and for making sense of one’s life. Life goals develop and are influenced by one’s view of what one is like, the way one would ideally like to be (or would like to avoid being), as well as one’s perceptions of what is feasible. Furthermore, conceptions of self and the world affect how one’s progress towards these goals is monitored,evaluated, redirected, re-evaluated, and pursued again. Thus, the “self” as a construct has far-reaching implications for behavior, self-esteem, motivation, experience of emotions and the world more broadly, and hence for interpersonal relationships, society, and culture.Self and Identity is devoted to the study of these social and psychological processes of the self, including both its agentic aspects, as well as the perceived and construed aspects as reflected in its mental representations. The Journal aims to bring together work on self and identity undertaken by researchers across different subdisciplines within psychology (e.g., social, personality, clinical, development, cognitive), as well as across other social and behavioral disciplines (e.g., sociology, family studies, anthropology, neuroscience). Special emphasis is placed on theories and research that are generative in opening new terrain for future investigation. A second continual motivating goal of the journal, will be work that offers integration at the level of basic processes. Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere Magazine
In recent years, the subject of the origin and early evolution of life has seen an unprecedented development. New theories concerning the origins of life, such as cometary sources of organics, the possible role of marine hydrothermal systems on the chemistry of the primitive earth and the postulate of the RNA world have brought many new scientists to the field of origins of life. It is the role of Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere to bring these articles together in one journal.While any scientific study which contributes to our understanding of the origins of life is suitable for inclusion in the journal, some examples of important areas of interest are: prebiotic chemistry and the nature of Earths early environment, self-replicating and self-organizing systems, the theory of the RNA world and other possible precursor systems, and the problem of the origin of the genetic code. Early evolution of life - as revealed by such techniques as the elucidation of biochemical pathways, molecular phylogeny, the study of Precambrian sediments and fossils and of major innovations in microbial evolution - forms a second focus. Related to these core areas, Astrobiology/Exobiology refers to the origin and evolution of life in a cosmic context, and includes planetary atmospheres, interstellar chemistry, the organic chemistry of comets, meteorites, asteroids and other small bodies, life detection and related areas. Experimental papers, theoretical articles and authorative literature reviews are all appropriate forms.Since the journals first publication in 1968, when it was entitled Space Life Sciences, from 1974 to 1983, when it was called Origins of Life, and from 1984 to the present as Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere, it has continued to publish special issues and papers dealing with important topics concerning the origin and early evolution of life. For example, recent special issues of the journal include `Marine Hydrothermal Systems, `Comets and the Origins and Evolution of Life, and `RNA and the Origins of Life. In addition, Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere publishes the abstracts from the triennial meetings of the International Society of the Study of the Origins of Life as well as key papers from these meetings. .
