The editorial team does not seek to impose one model for practice. For JAN, nursing is what different nurses do at different times and in different places. It is advanced nursing when nurses question their practice within its specific cultural, political, economic, social and technological context, asking whether their practice is as effective, efficient and compassionate as possible, given the particular circumstances. Nurses need to be educated to practise intelligently, think ethically, understand research and its application, and to be aware of the constraints of the socio-economic and political climates within which they work. Nursing and midwifery also form part of a complex web of health care. Advanced nursing is about making this complexity explicit. Papers are therefore welcomed from other health care professionals and researchers if they contribute to the overall objective of understanding advanced nursing and midwifery within health care systems. .
